Broadening Knowledge Orthopaedic Surgery

By Waluyo Sugito

My decision to continue studying in Netherlands is based on the fact that the Oncologic Center in Netherlands has the cutting edge of technology, the breadth of knowledge in Oncologic Orthopaedic. I believe that University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) as one of four Orthopaedic Oncologic Center in Netherlands, provides opportunities to do so not only through the theoretical lesson, but also through the case studies from the practical in daily practice.

The dream came true in the end of 2018 when I received Letter of Acceptance from UMCG. The fellowship would be started on January 2019 for 6 months. To finance myself for taking part in advanced training abroad is likewise problematic for me as for the majority of young orthopaedics in Indonesia. On the other hand, I realized that this opportunity is a great chance for me and also for other young orthopaedics that want to pursue the same dreams in the future.

The deadline was so closed for me to seek financial support. Fortunately one of my colleague, gave me information to apply for a grant from Marinus Plantema Foundation. I was very lucky, in the last minute before my departure to Netherlands, Marinus Plantema Foundation provided grant for my study. I believe my journey in Netherlands can motivate young Indonesian orthopaedic surgeon to do so, because the opportunities are accessible. Also I hope Marinus Plantema foundation will grow bigger, prosperer, continue to succeed and also support Indonesian people to pursue their dreams.

My supervisor P.C. Jutte with me and the residents after pre-clinic discussion. In this session we talk about patients planning for the day in the clinic.
In the operating room with my second supervisor JJW Ploegmakers and OR team. I have the opportunity to join besides oncology cases also hip reconstruction cases with him.
